Indie Tarot Deck Reviews: Shadowscapes Tarot

I’m here to talk about my absolute favorite deck, the Shadowscapes Tarot created by the amazing watercolor artist, Stephanie Pui-Mun Law.

I have been a fan of her paintings for years, so when I found out she had made a tarot deck I just had to have it. It has been my go-to deck ever since. The artwork is dreamy and ethereal, each card beautifully painted with fantastical creatures, soft colors, and a silver border with the name and number of the card. Being a typical Pisces the aesthetic of this deck was everything I could have wanted.

Now, while this deck is beautiful, it’s not the easiest to read when you’re getting into tarot. The cards artwork and symbolism is somewhat different from the traditional Rider-Waite deck, and the book that comes with Shadowscapes, while it does go over the general meanings of all the cards, is rather basic and fails to go in depth in any meaningful way. So if you decide to purchase this deck, keep in mind that a lot of websites and books that deep dive into tarot use the Rider-Waite as their default when talking about the symbolism located in those cards, which do not show up in Shadowscapes. Doesn’t make it impossible, just might take more time to get used to how these cards communicate. And boy, do they communicate in a sassy way (another reason why I love them).

Personality wise (yes, decks totally have personalities, ask any tarot reader), my particular deck is blunt. The very opposite of what you would expect from such a flowy, delicate looking deck. I can’t say this will be the personality of every Shadowscapes deck, but mine doesn’t know what sugar coating is and I love them for it. This deck has told more people than not to break up with their boyfriend or tell their boss to go pound sand and quit with no notice. Like I said, sassy af, but I love them and wouldn’t change them for anything.
